Communication
All formal communication outside of discussion should go through Edmodo email portal. Discussions with me or classmates will be conducted solely via the Edmodo as well. All communication and information regarding the online course will be sent to you by e-mail, therefore you must check your e-mail daily for any new information pertinent to you. You must maintain an accurate e-mail account and keep it available for incoming course information. I will do my best to respond to your inquiry as quickly as possible but please allow up to 24 hours for response Monday through Friday (weekend responses received between 5pm on Fridays and 10 am on the following Mondays are not guaranteed). In the case when Edmodo is down, you can reach me in the following methods:
Attendance and Drop Policy Successful completion of a course is dependent upon regular attendance and participation. Critical information is delivered through lecture, critique and student participation. Students are expected to log on and participate to my online class at least 4 days a week. A one-day period is defined as the period of twenty-four hours from 12:00 am PST to 11:59pm PST on the same calendar day. For a post to count as attendance towards a particular day, it must be completed within this time period. Attendance is mandatory. You will be automatically dropped from the class if you fail to submit your first assignment by Week 1, Friday 11:59pm PST. Excused absences for personal hospitalization or accidents, death in the family or jury duty, require the presentation of written evidence. However, any type of excessive absences may jeopardize passing the class, including those absences that are excused.
Assignment Expectation All assignment submissions will include mandatory due dates that I will strictly enforced. All assignment submission are due before 11:59pm of the assigned due date. All students will automatically receive one “Hall Pass” in the beginning of the quarter and can be used to avoid one late assignment submission penalty. Students can earn additional “Hall Pass” by submitting assignments on time three consecutive times and receives 70 Experience points (XPs) or higher on each assignment. Assignments can be re-do for higher grade if work was turned in on time. No late work on discussion threads. Just a reminder, submitting assignments on time will earn you Reputation Points (RPs). If you have trouble completing any of the assignments or having trouble understanding the requirements, please contact me right away and post your questions in the Edmodo forum to ensure timely response and minimalize the risk of late work. Academic Honesty Policy: Students are expected to maintain the highest standard of academic honesty while pursuing their studies at The Art Institutes. Academic dishonesty includes but not limited to: plagiarism and cheating; misuse of academic resources or facilities; and misuse of computer software, data, equipment and/or networks. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the use (copying) of another person’s ideas, words, visual images or audio samples, presented in a manner that makes the work appear to be the student’s original creation. All work that is not the student’s original creation, or any idea of fact that is not “common knowledge,” must be documented properly to avoid even accidental infractions of the conduct code. Cheating: Cheating is to gain unfair advantage on a grade by deception, fraud, or breaking the rules set forth by the instructor of the class. Cheating may include but not limited to: copying work of others; unauthorized use of notes or other materials; communicating to others during an exam; any other unfair advantage as determined by the instructor. Additional information is located in the student handbook. Student work that appears to violate AiCA-SV’s standard of academic honesty will be reviewed by the Committee on Academic Honesty. If the work is judged to have violated standard of academic honesty, appropriate sanctions will be given. Sanctions include but not limited to course failure and academic termination. |
CommentaryThese polices are school standard language except the Communication section and are to be placed in all of our syllabi. Therefore, as an instructor, my main role will be to go over these polices one by one on the first day of class. I believe we can also do the same for online classes by having students to post questions in the Q&A forum, hosting a CCC confer kickoff meeting, and having students to explain why these polices are important as part of their participation exercises.
